Broad Form Auto Insurance Coverage

Broad form insurance is an inexpensive option for acquiring auto liability insurance for your vehicles. Broad form coverage also serves as an acceptable way to meet SR22 insurance requirements in certain states.

What is Broad Form Coverage?

Frequently called Broad Form Named Operator insurance, this is an auto insurance policy that covers liability insurance for any cars owned or not owned by the named insured. Nobody else can drive the insureds vehicles and be covered, no exceptions.

This coverage is appropriate only for drivers who know that no one else will ever drive their car. If you have a family, a significant other, or anyone else who is likely to get behind the wheel of your car, broad form auto insurance is not for you. Coverage is limited to you and ONLY you. This means that you are the only one that can make a claim on this policy and you must have been the driver when the accident occurred or the claim will be denied.

If you let another driver use your car and that driver crashes, you will not have coverage for the damage to your vehicle or other vehicles possibly involved in the accident, and you can still be held legally responsible for all damages. Broad form can save money on premiums, but only if you are completely confident that you will be the only driver.

This type of liability coverage applies to all owned vehicles by the policy holder. The named insured would be covered for all cars they have titled in their name for liability only coverage.

What Broad Form Auto Insurance Does NOT Cover:

Does not give any motorcycle coverage.
Does not give any coverage for damages to your own autos.
Does not cover company cars.
Does not give comprehensive or collision coverage.
Does not cover uninsured or under insured motorist.

Things to Consider with Broad Form Insurance

This can be a great option for many drivers, but to make sure you are getting the right coverage for you and your lifestyle, there are a few things to consider.  For example, you can never let anyone else use your vehicle. That means, if you have a friend over that asks to use your car to run to the store, the answer is no,  if a relative is in town and needs a vehicle to drive, the answer is no.  You are the only person listed on the insurance policy, therefore you are the only one that can drive your vehicles.  If you do, and they are involved in an accident, your insurance will not cover any damages, putting the person who was driving and yourself open to extreme financial consequences.
