In 2013, the rate of alcohol-influenced fatalities per 100,000 was 3.2, a 65% decrease since record keeping began in 1982, and a 49% decrease since 1991. This means that for every 100,000 people in the United States in 2013, 3 were killed in an alcohol-influenced accident; the rate per 100,000 in 1991 was 6.3 in 1991. Alcohol related accidents represented 31% of total traffic deaths in 2013. However, this has dropped 49% nationally since 1991.
These statistics represent gains being made in the battle of awareness in the danger of driving under the influence. -32,719 people died in traffic crashed in the United States in 2013, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. -10,076 of these people were killed in drunk driving accidents with a drive with an illegal BAC, which means that it was 0.08 or greater. Among these people killed, 6,515 were drivers, 2,724 were motor vehicle occupants, and 837 were non-occupants.
The national average of being killed by a drunk driver was one death every 50 MINUTES in 2020.
