Why does SR22 cost so much?

This is a fair question but there are many factors involved.  First let’s explain what the SR-22 actually is.  Also referred to as AAMVA or Financial Responsibility.  It is proof of insurance, it is an attachment to as regular auto insurance policy (including the Non-Owner or Operators policy and in most states even Motorcycle or Scooter policies.)  You are paying for insurance, the SR22 or FR44 is very little cost even free with certain carriers.  Wessell Insurance Services LLC The “SR22 Specialists” has been filing SR22 and FR44 nationwide for nearly 20 years, we have specialized in this area and know all the ins and outs of the state bureaucracy we handle sr22, fr44 dl123, cross state and multi state filings to help people reinstate their driving privileges, you can call us at 866 663 7561 with any questions or to get a fast free quote CLICK HERE for an online quote form. The SR-22 / FR-44 filing is activated upon inception of the policy and cancels if the policy were to cancel for any reason.  It provides proof of active insurance for the state DMV and allows the state to monitor active coverage for the determined duration, often 3 years but can be different amount of time which the state decides.  The FR44 is only required in Florida and Virginia, it acts the same as SR22 except it requires higher liability limits and is required in connection to alcohol or substance related offenses.  Now the cost of your sr22 is actually the cost of your insurance which is calculated by several factors.  The zip code where you live, driving record and age are the main factors that determine your cost.  Zip code has significant influence on your price, even if your driving record is clean, the number of total accidents, population, traffic, number of intersections, average speed limits will all influence the risk factors of driving in that area.  Then obviously your driving history and age can affect your costs.  Non-Owner policies cost less than Owner auto policies but still have same limits of liability as auto policies, the cost may seem high but the insurance carrier still is liable for tens of thousands of dollars potentially which is why it might seem unreasonably high cost.  Type of coverage and policy is also a major cost difference.  Full coverage auto is most expensive price due to highest maximum payout and rise in prices of labor, parts and supply.  The increase in serious accidents, uninsured drivers and theft has sent full coverage auto policies to higher prices.  Liability only auto is considerably lower in price due to lower amount of coverage and fewer covered risks or perils.  Non-owner policies being the lowest cost of auto insurance.  Motorcycle or Scooter insurance policies are usually the cheapest, mainly due to the rider being at highest risk and risk of damage to others is much lower, but full coverage on cycle insurance is much different than liability only.  Every state has different minimum requirements determined by its individual state agency DOI (Department of Insurance), all states require liability coverage for Bodily Injury BI and Property Damage PD, some states require Uninsured Motorist and/or Underinsured Motorist which affect costs.  A few states still require Personal Injury Protection PIP, referred to as “No fault” insurance.  I often hear people say “I just need an sr22” but an sr-22 doesn’t exist in itself, it must be attached to an insurance policy which is what you are paying for.  To simplify everything, when the Department of Motor Vehicles requires an SR22, SR50, FR44 or DL123 they are asking for proof of insurance also called financial responsibility.  They will determine how long you need to carry it for meaning how long to maintain the policy with no lapse in coverage.  Any type of insurance policy listed in this article applies will satisfy state requirements to reinstate or get first drivers license.  Although the costs may seem high or excessive, you should ask yourself how would i feel if someone causes an accident that hurts me or my passengers and damages my car and doesn’t have insurance or a valid license, it is our social responsibility to drive safely and protect ourselves as well as everyone who shares the road.  The fewer uninsured drivers and more safe and conscientious drivers on the road the safer it will be and the cheaper our insurance rates will get.
